How is a column radiator made?

Often a column radiator is mistaken for a cast iron radiator which is a traditionally cast radiator made in a foundry. Column rads are a more modern approach, manufactured from tubular steel, for the vertical columns and pressed steel sections that house the threads that join each section. These sections are normally spot welded or induction welded, then these sections can be joined to form almost any length of radiator.
The sizing of the rads are generally expressed as follows;

  • Length - is made up of "sections" that run along the wall.
  • Depth - is the number of columns, 3 column being the most common depth. Most common depth of column are 2, 3, 4 and 6, ranging from around 63mm (2½") up to a thickness of 230mm (9")
  • Height - Is generally the overall height, less the height of the feet that the rad sits upon. The 6 column radiators are often short and stumpy with heights as low as 300mm, 2 column version are often tall or a narrow design and the 3 column often used as vertical radiators giving high heat output.
